Recruit in South Africa

South Africa is the region's deepest talent market and most foreign employers hire from Gauteng. Corporate and finance leadership sits in Sandton, Midrand and Bryanston, manufacturing and logistics in Ekurhuleni, Isando and Kempton Park near OR Tambo, and automotive in Rosslyn north of Pretoria, with global business services concentrated in Cape Town and Durban. The difficulty is not supply but competition: scarce-skill candidates are counter-offered, and employment equity targets shape who can realistically be appointed.

ArkTalents sources through direct approach, professional bodies such as SAICA and SAIOSH, referrals across the Gauteng industrial belt, and LinkedIn. English is the business language, with Afrikaans or Zulu useful on plant and field roles. Interviews run on video then in person in Johannesburg, and four weeks' notice under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act is standard, longer for executives. Where no local company exists, ArkTalents employs through in-country employment and runs PAYE, UIF and SDL payroll.

Local vs expatriate

Who we shortlist

These roles are filled overwhelmingly by South African nationals, because employment equity reporting and B-BBEE scorecards make local and designated-group appointments the default. Expatriates appear mainly in group technical or commissioning roles and need a Critical Skills Work Visa, or a General Work Visa with Department of Employment and Labour certification, both now scored under the points system.

Questions

FAQ

How long to a first shortlist?
A first South African shortlist typically takes 12 to 22 working days. It stretches for CA(SA) finance leadership, SAHPRA-facing regulatory roles and senior SHEQ appointments, where qualification checks, employment equity considerations and counter-offers from local corporates all add time.
Do you search local and expatriate candidates?
Yes, with local candidates as the base case. ArkTalents searches South African nationals nationwide, South African returnees from the UK and UAE, and regional African candidates already holding work rights. New expatriate hires are shortlisted only where a Critical Skills Work Visa is credible.
Which roles do you run most often here?
Operations director, plant director, SHEQ manager, supply chain head and commercial director are the most common mandates, reflecting the automotive and FMCG manufacturing base in Gauteng and the volume of customer-service and shared-service hiring for offshore clients.
Can you run this as RPO as well as retained search?
Yes. ArkTalents runs RPO for large intakes, including contact-centre agents for Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban campaigns, production operators, qualified artisans and field sales teams, with retained search reserved for single executive or scarce-skill appointments.
