In-country employment in Indonesia

Indonesia is a plant-ramp, commercial, and Jakarta-vs-industrial-park market. Those locations do not share a wage floor.

THR is a statutory extra month, not a discretionary bonus. Budget it from the first month of employment.

  • Indonesian labour contractThe person is employed under Indonesian labour law — PKWT or PKWTT — in the place of work.

  • You still manageYour managers set the work. We run the contract, BPJS, THR, and payroll.

Statutory stack

What sits on top of wages

BPJS is a published stack. THR is a full extra month for eligible staff. Neither figure is a salary survey.

Choose a path

In-country employment vs incorporating

In-country employment is the usual path for a first Indonesia hire or a plant ramp. A PT PMA is the path when you want your own legal person.

Onboarding

From briefing to first payday

BPJS registration and the correct provincial (and district) wage floor set the calendar.

  1. 01

    Briefing

Province and district of work, role, nationality, and start date.

  2. 02

    Contract

PKWT or PKWTT, probation where allowed, and the wage structure (SUSU) if tenure will pass one year.

  3. 03

    BPJS

Kesehatan and Ketenagakerjaan registration, plus work-permit steps for foreign hires.

  4. 04

    First payday

Monthly pay, BPJS, PPh 21, and a THR accrual so the holiday month is not a surprise.

  5. 05

    Convert or close

Move onto your PT PMA, or terminate under the Job Creation Law compensation rules.

Compliance

Five points that change the hire

  1. 01

Minimum wage is UMP, and often UMK

Jakarta's 2026 provincial floor is IDR 5,729,876 a month. Many districts set a higher UMK. Use the place the person actually works.

  2. 02

    THR is statutory

One month's wages for a year of service, pro-rated after one month, paid at least seven days before the employee's religious holiday. It is not a bonus you can skip.

  3. 03

PKWT is not a permanent contract with a quieter name

Fixed-term contracts have statutory limits. Misusing PKWT for an ongoing role is a conversion and compensation risk.

  4. 04

BPJS ceilings are not one number

Health is capped at IDR 12 million of wages. Pension (JP) has a separate ceiling, raised from 1 March 2026. JHT, JKK, and JKM are not on that pension cap.

  5. 05

    Severance still matters

Termination compensation under the Job Creation Law implementing regulations is still a multiple of wages. Budget an exit before you hire.

Questions

FAQ

Can we hire in Indonesia without a local company?
Yes. In-country employment puts the person on a local labour contract with BPJS and THR, while your managers direct the work.
What is Indonesia's minimum wage in 2026?
There is no single national floor. Each province sets a UMP; many districts set a higher UMK. Jakarta's 2026 UMP is IDR 5,729,876 a month, the highest provincial rate.
Is THR required?
Yes. Eligible employees with twelve months' service receive one month's wages; those with at least one month receive a pro-rated amount. Pay it at least seven days before the religious holiday.
How much is employer BPJS?
A typical stack is BPJS Kesehatan 4% (capped), JHT 3.7%, JP 2% (capped), JKM 0.30%, and JKK 0.24%–1.74% by risk class. Accrue THR on top — that is a further month, not a BPJS line.
